As a PUM expert in the leather industry, im-innovating provides voluntary advisory services focused on improving processes, sustainability, and operational performance.

PUM is a Dutch NGO headquartered in The Hague, founded in 1978 by VNO-NCW and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its mission is to strengthen entrepreneurs and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

A business ecosystem brings together companies and supporting organizations to address shared challenges and create economic, social, and environmental value.

Recently, im-innovating was invited by the City of Bulawayo to participate in a two-day Trade Effluent and Water Recycling Conference Indaba (25–26 February 2026). The event focused on raising awareness of the impact of industrial pollution on the city’s sewer infrastructure.

The leather industry, in particular, was highlighted due to its significant water consumption during the tanning process.

The City partnered with Vitens Evides International and PUM to deliver technical assistance on water resource management and support local entrepreneurs.

The Indaba aimed to:

Equip industries with practical solutions for effluent pre-treatment and compliance

Reduce harmful discharges into municipal sewer systems and water bodies

Strengthen institutional capacity for monitoring and enforcement

Promote local innovation and circular economy practices

Following the conference, im-innovating visited several tanneries in Bulawayo that had requested PUM support. During these visits, a structured Plan of Approach was developed.

The objective is to analyze current production processes, identify sources of waste and wastewater, and define practical improvements to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Our emphasis was on discerning various hides and skins, taking into account factors such as animal origin, texture, strength, grain, and more.

We delved deeply into the intricate steps involved in transforming raw hides into exquisite leather, culminating in the opportunity to craft our own distinctive finishes.
